How to Properly Deal with Lower Back Pain

Did you know that the most common cause of lower back pain is lumbar muscle strains and pains? Since your lower back bears the brunt of your upper body’s weight, it can become painful when you twist, bend, and move. During the process, the muscle fibers tend to become torn or abnormally stretched. Thankfully, lower back pain can be alleviated by improving your posture, taking some pain medication, applying ice and heat, and doing some lower back stretches.

Tips for Dealing with Lower Back Pain

Improve Your Posture

People who have poor posture are prone to lower back pain. If you sit for long periods slumped over your keyboard, you’ll need to seriously think about changing the way you sit. Sitting upright with your feet flat on the floor, your shoulders relaxed, and your back properly supported against the back of the chair is the best way to go.

Take Some Pain Medication

Other people may need to take prescription drugs such as NSAIDs or opioids in order to ease their lower back pain. If you’re one of them, you’ll need to talk to your health provider if you’re taking any other type of medication because these may contain active ingredients that may not work well with your pain meds.

Apply Ice and Heat

Another way to reduce pain and inflammation on your lower back is by regularly applying ice several times a day for 20 minutes each time. In order to keep your skin protected, you’ll need to use a thin towel for wrapping the ice pack. After a few days, you can apply a warm pack to increase the blood flow into the area and help your muscles relax.
